Bio

Dr. Mike McElveen
Dr. Michael McElveen was born and raised in Amite, LA. He graduated from Amite High School and then attended Louisiana Tech University in Ruston, LA, where he graduated with a Bachelor's Degree in Animal Science. Dr. Mike earned his doctorate in veterinary medicine from LSU in 1989. He then went back to Ruston to work in a mixed animal practice for a year before returning to Baton Rouge and working at an emergency clinic in New Orleans. Dr. Mike and Dr. Ron Ponthieux opened the Baton Rouge Pet Emergency Hospital in July of 1995. Dr. Mike and Dr. Ron bring a total of 49 years of emergency experience to the Baton Rouge Pet Emergency Hospital and have taken care of more than 43,000 emergency cases for people in the Greater Baton Rouge area since 1995. Dr. Mike has been committed to providing the best emergency care in the Baton Rouge area since 1995 and will continue to provide that care for many years to come.
Dr. Ron Ponthieu
Dr. Ron Ponthieu completed East Jefferson High School in Metairie, Louisiana, and moved on to Louisiana Tech from 1978-1981. Dr. Ron went on to Louisiana State University Veterinary School from 1981-1985.  He gained practical veterinary experience at Helouin Veterinary Hospital from 1985-1990, and then opened Bluebonnet Veterinary Hospital in April of 1990. Dr. Ron and Dr. Mike McElveen opened the Baton Rouge Pet Emergency Hospital in 1995. Dr. Ron’s special veterinary interests include orthopedic, ophthalmology, general surgery and emergency medicine. Dr. Ron has three daughters and enjoys hunting, fishing and LSU sports. He is also the current owner of Bluebonnet Veterinary Hospital.
Dr. Bolden
Dr. Bolden was born and raised in New Orleans, LA. His love for animals became evident at a very young age and was further cultivated at the Audubon Zoo, where he became involved in the Jr. Keeper Internship Program during Junior and Senior High School. His dream of becoming a veterinarian led him to Tuskegee University, where he received his degrees in both Animal Science (May 2010) and Veterinary Medicine (May 2014). Dr. Bolden enjoys all aspects of veterinary medicine, but he has a special interest in Small Animal Dentistry and Oral Surgery. When he is not busy saving the world one pet at a time, Dr. Bolden enjoys cooking, traveling and spending time with family and friends.
Dr. Malbrue (part-time/relief emergency veterinarian)
Dr. Malbrue was born and raised in Baton Rouge, LA. His passion for both animals and science started as a young boy when he met his first veterinarian in the fourth grade. Dr. Malbrue completed his undergraduate studies at Tuskegee University, majoring in Animal, Poultry and Veterinary Sciences. He additionally obtained his Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine degree from Tuskegee University School of Veterinary Medicine. Dr. Malbrue is currently a resident at Louisiana State University School of Veterinary Medicine specializing in Laboratory Animal Medicine. He truly enjoys the diversity within the profession, and is dedicated to finding cures for those devastating diseases that affect our "fur-buds". His special areas of interest include pocket pets (i.e. small rodents, rabbits, ferrets), small animal reproduction and small ruminants. Outside of work, Dr. Malbrue enjoys playing the saxophone (he's a huge jazz enthusiast), cooking, and spending time with his family.
Stephanie Charles, Practice Manager
Stephanie has years of experience in veterinary technology and in dog obedience training. She left animal employment to acquire a Bachelor's Degree in Nursing to go along with a degree in Microbiology and Parasitology. She specialized in Cardio-Thoracic surgery in the operating room and surgical trauma cases in ICU. Now she is back to her passion, caring for animals and being the practice manager for Baton Rouge Animal Hospital and Baton Rouge Pet Emergency Hospital. She states that she has never been happier and attributes that to the amazing veterinarians, veterinary technicians and caring families she works with on a regular basis.
